James received his Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario in 2006, where he majored in Psychology. He then obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, graduating in 2010. James was called to the bar in 2011 and joined Black Sutherland LLP in 2021. Prior to joining Black Sutherland LLP, James gained 10 years of experience in defending complex personal injury matters at two prominent Toronto litigation boutiques.

As a member of the insurance defence group, James’ practice includes motor vehicle accidents, occupier's liability, tavern liability and property damage claims. James has experience at all levels of Courts in Ontario. He has also assisted senior counsel in preparing materials seeking to deny an Application for Leave to Appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada in the decision El-Khodr v. Lackie, 2017 ONCA 716 (CanLII).

James is a tenacious litigator who vigorously defends the interests of his clients. James also takes a keen interest in reviewing the most recent jurisprudence to develop creative strategies to advance the interests of his clients.
