At the beginning of 2025, our firm marked a significant milestone as we bid farewell to a remarkable legal mind and an exceptional leader. Bob Sutherland, a name synonymous with integrity, advocacy, and mentorship, has officially retired from the practice of law.
Bob’s impact on our firm, our clients, and the legal profession cannot be overstated. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has shaped not only the success of our firm but also the professional journeys of countless colleagues. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to justice have left an enduring imprint on all of us.

This morning, I was deeply saddened to learn of Bob’s passing.
I had the privilege of working with Bob as a member of Black Sutherland from December 2000 until May 2016, and being his partner for 14 of those years. During that time, Bob’s leadership of the firm, both from a practice perspective, as well as creating and leading an outstanding supportive environment that made the firm a great place to work, was without equal.
Bob provided responsible financial leadership as well as an amazing people approach. His strategic focus on the firm’s professional and financial integrity never compromised his concern for supporting all of the firm’s members.
I will always consider my working relationship with Bob to of been one of the most rewarding and enjoyable periods in my 54-year career as a lawyer.
