Our Climate Commitment in Action: SBTi Validates Our Target

At Black Sutherland LLP, we’ve always taken pride in going the extra mile for our clients—many of whom we’ve had the privilege of working with for years. Whether we’re in the courtroom or offering behind-the-scenes guidance, our focus is on protecting what matters most.

Now, we’re applying that same mindset to something that affects all of us: climate change.

We’re proud to share that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially approved Black Sutherland LLP’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target. This marks an important step forward in our sustainability journey and reflects our commitment to operating responsibly—both in how we serve our clients and how we show up in the world.

Our company commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 46.2% by 2031 from a 2023 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.

While law firms aren’t typically seen as large emitters, we believe that every business has a role to play in addressing the climate crisis. From the way we manage our office space to the systems and services we rely on, we’re taking a close look at how we can lower our impact.

Our strength has always been in Insurance Defence Litigation, where we’re known for being strategic, tenacious, and practical. That approach shapes how we work on every file—and now, it’s guiding how we approach climate action. Like any complex challenge, it takes planning, accountability, and follow-through.

This effort is also grounded in our broader firm values. In every practice area—from Comprehensive Business Law Services and Employment Law to Municipal Law and Licensing Compliance for liquor and cannabis—we aim to be trusted partners and strong advocates for our clients. That includes taking steps today that support a more resilient tomorrow.

This is only the beginning. As we move forward, we’ll share our progress and lessons learned. We also welcome conversations with others—whether you or your organization is already on a similar path toward emissions reduction or just beginning to explore your environmental impact. We believe there’s great value in sharing ideas, learning from each other’s experiences, and supporting collective progress toward a more sustainable future.

Thank you for joining us as we take this meaningful step toward a more sustainable and resilient future.
